PDP guber candidate warns against N35b loan to Cross River

Governorship candidate of Cross River State Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Sandy Onor, has warned financial institutions both in Nigeria and abroad not to grant any loan to the state government.

He gave the warning at the weekend while briefing newsmen at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Calabar.

He accused the state government of planning to borrow N35 billion with few days to stay in office.

Onor, who is the senator representing Cross River State Central Senatorial District, quoted the Debt Management Office (DMO) as saying that the debt profile of the state stood at $279 million at the end of March, this year.

He said: “We must not allow this to happen because the incoming government will be inheriting a mountain of debts to grapple with.”

“As of March this year, the debt profile of the state stood at $279 million dollars from the debt management office. Yet the outgoing government is thinking of conniving with the state House of Assembly to borrow this whopping sum of N35 billion dollars just to put final nail on the coffin, before he leaves the stage.

“This should therefore serve as warning to all financial institutions in and outside the county.”

While urging Cross River people to get their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) to vote for change, he said it was high time the people of the state retrieved what belonged to them.
