Some members of Otulu-Ogwashi-Uku community in Aniocha South Local Council of Delta State have rejected the selection of a traditional ruler in their kingdom.
The community stormed Government House, Asaba in the early hours of yesterday in protest, asking the state government to allow them and their community to exist without unnecessary interference from Ogwashi-Uku kingdom.
But the Ogwashi-Uku community has condemned the protest, saying the protesters were recruited bystanders, who are non-indigenes of the community.
Reacting to the protest, secretary to Obi Traditional Council of Ogwashi-Uku, Chief Zeliwe Ojeogwu, said: “Ogwashi-Uku Community absolutely reject the fake, contrived, false, slanderous and baseless protest by non indigenous members of our Otulu Ogwashi-Uku community”.
Ojeogwu alleged that the vast majority of the people who protested were forced into buses by one Francis Odiakose, who asked them to pay N10,000, if they refused to go for the protest.
He said: “ The state government has made it clear in writing since April this year that Otulu is part of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom and is under Obi of Ogwashi-Uku HRM Obi Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II. So, as far as we are concerned, this issue has been settled.”
The Secretary to Ogwashi-Uku kingdom urged the youths, who are agitated with the action of the protesters, not to take the law into their hands.
He stressed that though the Constitution guarantees freedom of speech and protest, it should be checked.
