Caleb British International wins Global Goals Sustainability Award

Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Farm Project by Young Entrepreneurs’ Club of Caleb British International School has won Global Goals Sustainability Award.

The competition was organised by The Global Social Leader in collaboration with Future Foundation, UK.

A statement by the school’s Director of Operations, Shola Adeola, explained that the Club set up a STEM farm; a hydroponic farm on the school premises to campaign against deforestation and for the community to embrace climate-smart agricultural systems as against traditional systems, which have proven to be environmentally unsustainable.

According to her, the project enabled the students to learn problem-solving techniques and critical thinking, effective communication and collaboration as well as entrepreneurship.

She quoted Jakub Goscinny, Global Outreach and Development Manager, Future Foundation as saying: “This year-long competition comprised 245 schools across the world.”

Commenting on the entry, he said: “The judges were so impressed by the standard of your project that they have selected STEM Farm to receive a commendation in the category of sustainability. Your project is truly innovative and something that I haven’t seen before.

“I am impressed at your ability to work together to learn a completely new science in agriculture and take this within your local community to show everyone how it works and how it can be used for long term sustainability in farming.

“Your digital submission was powerful as it showed me images of what the hydroponics system of farming actually looks like, and your final report gave me really interesting details about why you chose this and how you went about it! It was so nice to hear the timeline of your project from start until now.”

He urged the school to continue with STEM Farm for years to come and reach more people within your community.
