It is said that “man is not made for the law, but law made for man.” Though there are no straight-jacketed rules to success in business, certain things are inevitable still.

The desire to build a great company is great, but above all, certain things must be learnt, especially for entrepreneurs and start-ups. Enterprises that have lasted centuries will readily submit that what has kept them standing and outlasting generations is learning, and will unequivocally say it is a continuous curve.

This is one key ingredient that has kept one of South Africa’s major commodity transportation companies; Bright Carriers, also regarded as Drbtgar, founded by Edo-born businessman, Uduimho Bright Ogedengbe, strong over the years.

Bright Carriers is a major player in the southern African country’s haulage sector. Drbtgar is renowned for its promptness, top-notch service delivery, and its uncommon operational structure, which gives importance to clients and welfare of its drivers.

In a recent interview, while issuing valuable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs in the business, Ogedengbe hinted at how he has been able to sustain the company’s vision and growth.

“They should aspire to learn the business, focus on learning the business and take their focus off money. Yes, the goal is to make money, but taking their eyes off money in the beginning allows the brain to focus on learning. When knowledge is acquired, money will follow”, said Ogedengbe.

Continuing, Ogedengbe said: “To start a trucking company, you have to investigate what aspect of trucking you want to do, do SWOT analysis and get a truck by leasing or purchasing, depending on what your finances can handle. I would also advise starting with one truck for a period of time to keep the focus on one before expanding.

“Discipline will aid quick expansion. If leasing a truck, one should endeavour to have the discipline to not spend profits but save profits, save to be able to put money together to buy a truck and from one truck to another, continue that way. If a trucker can minimize spending profits for a couple of years in the business, growth will be guaranteed,” Ogedengbe added.

The Drbtgar founder also emphasized that it is important to diversify as a business person, which he, however, urged must be done after a business owner must have mastered the venture at hand first.

“Generally it’s never a good idea to have just one source of income, no matter how well it is doing, it’s never a good idea. If you have just one company a trucking company for instance one should endeavour to tap into different arms of the industry, there is so much to do in the trucking industry, doing different types of work within that industry puts an entrepreneur in that safe net of having multiple sources of income,” Ogedengbe maintained.

Speaking further, he said: “Personally, I like to master something properly before moving to the next, I’ve been focused on side tippers because I wanted to get to the point of mastering it. Now that Bright Carriers has mastered side tipper work, we are purchasing other types of trailers to enable us venture into other arms of the industry this year.”
