Begins enforcement next week
Chairman of Lagos State Environment and Special Offences Enforcement Unit (Task Force), Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), Shola Jejeloye, has warned traders and commercial motorists in the state against displaying their wares on walkways and parking indiscriminately along Oshodi road and across the state.
He said their action is causing congestion and impeding free flow of traffic along that axis.
Speaking at the headquarters of the Agency at Bolade Oshodi, Lagos, Jejeloye asked market leaders to inform their members, who are in the habit of displaying their wares indiscriminately on the road and walkways to desist from violating traffic and environmental laws.
He said: “We carried out an enforcement exercise on March 9, 2022, where some goods were seized from traders, vehicles impounded from some commercial bus drivers, but we had compassion on the traders and some drivers who promised that they would not return to the roadside.
“Unfortunately, they are fully back on the road, but this time, anyone caught displaying goods by the roadside will be arrested and prosecuted by the Agency.”
Jejeloye urged traders to use the marketplaces, parks and garages and building plaza provided by the state government, which is safer and more convenient to carry out their businesses.
He also called on sister agencies, such as the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps who have also been carrying out raids on roadside traders, to partner with the Task Force in ensuring that orderliness and sanity are achieved and maintained on the road.
He said commercial vehicle operators who disregard traffic rules will henceforth be arrested and have their vehicles impounded if they do not turn over a new leaf.
“Designated bus stops and motor parks have been provided in Oshodi. So, there is no reason to inconvenience Lagosians by parking in the middle of the road to drop off and pick up passengers. It will no longer be business as usual,” he added.
