Uju-Chima, who represents Ohaji/Egbema, Oguta, Oru Federal Constituency of Imo State, urged the House to find a way to appropriate more to teachers as soon as it receives the 2023 budget from President Muhammadu Buhari.
Recall that World Teachers’ Day was celebrated on Wednesday, October 5, with the theme: ‘The Transformation of Education Begins With Teachers.’
Uju-Chima said: “As a parliamentarian, I urge the House to devote enough percentage of the education budget to teachers, as well as the development of the education system in Nigeria.
“As we receive the budget from President Buhari, education should be given utmost priority to develop our nation in accordance with the United Nations charter.
“If we watch the level of insecurity today in the country, it is borne out of the high level of ignorance and illiteracy.”
The lawmaker said there is a need for Nigerians, including lawmakers, to appreciate teachers, considering that without them, they wouldn’t be who they are today.
“I am sure if teachers were not there, perhaps some of us might be farming or in the village, and may not have had the opportunity of coming to Abuja to see the level of development we have seen.
“This is why it is imperative for us to celebrate teachers, especially, the ones that taught and impacted directly on our lives as students, either in primary, secondary or in the university,” Uju-Chima added.
He noted that teachers inculcated most virtues, as well as the discipline he exhibits as lawmaker.
“Though most of us hated many of these teachers for being disciplinarians, the discipline they impacted paid off. Those canes were actually to remodel us,” he stressed.
He, therefore, commended the Speaker of the House for creating an opportunity to celebrate teachers on World Teachers’ Day, noting that no one can become anything without going through the school system.
