International Federation of Women Lawyers Association (FIDA), Imo State chapter, has urged government at all levels to put in place reviewed measures that would further guarantee adequate protection of girl-child rights.
Imo FIDA also stressed the need to formulate policies and laws that would afford every girl unrestricted access to quality education, as well as health care services.
The association, led by its Chairperson, Ndidi Anike, made the call at an event marking the 2022 International Day for Girl-child, held yesterday.
Addressing students of Owerri City School on significance of the day, Anike said: “The urgent need to tackle the prevalence of domestic violence, child marriage, inequality, among other forms of girl-child abuses, can not be overemphasized.
“Aside expectations from government, other stakeholders, including teachers, parents and guardians should join in efforts to guarantee the safety, freedom and adequate development of the girl-child.”
Also, speaking on domestic violence, Vice Chairperson of the association, Dr. Chizo Okpara, of Abia State University, urged students to speak up against acts that affect their physical and psychological health, as well as their general well-being.
According to her, Imo FIDA is committed to assisting women and children, who are victims of domestic violence and abuses, to get justice.
She said the association would partner with school managements in the state to ensure cases of unjust treatments meted on any student are adequately reported for onward prosecution of culprits.
In her vote of thanks, the principal of the school, Mrs. Georgy Ahuaka, appreciated the Imo team, which included: Mrs. Chinyere Iwunna, Mrs. Nancy Nwabia, Mrs. Lilian Anyanwu and Ogechi Nwadialo, for the visit and promised to continue to champion the course for general well-being of the school community.
