Bothered by the flooding crisis in Nigeria, Group Managing Director of GText Holdings, Dr Stephen Akintayo, has said that proper drainage systems and architectural structures could avert such cases.
He added that the effects of land reclamation could be addressed by proper planning.
He stated this while the firm launched its new estate ‘Sardus Creek’ located at Ogudu, Lagos.
“Nigeria doesn’t have natural disasters. The problem we have is lack of proper structures for the water to flow through. When you don’t have the right structures, you start having issues of flooding. We don’t have sinkhole issues like that in Nigeria; some of our problems are artificial. For example, for this land we are doing the foundation over eight feet down and we usually sand fill with four feets for all our building projects,” he said.
He noted that in a bid to contribute to local and economic development in the nation, the firm would employ at least 500 people, a portion of which would be indigenes of the local community, while working on the new estate project.
According to him, the firm has partner with Knauf, a German building material company to develop the Creek, which would cost millions of dollars.
We aim to interlock the access road and link it to the bridge so that residents would have easy access. The estate would be fenced and have security in place like CCTV, which would see over a kilometer away,” he added.
The firm reiterated its commitment to train real estate practitioners on skills to upscale in the industry, adding that they have various locations within Lagos to host such trainings.
Celebrity Stylist, Toyin Lawani, applauding the firm on its instant land allocation after purchase, noted that a lot of property owners face challenge of no apportionment.
“The problem a lot of young landlords have in Nigeria is allocation. I know a lot about the business of property buying and selling and the major problem so far is allocation. These days, it is important that you check where you are putting your money into so due diligence cannot be over emphasised,” she added.
A Socialite, Mike Nwogu, also known as Pretty Mike, called on everyone to contribute their quota for a better Nigeria as everyone would not be able to migrate to other nations.
“I applaud the company for the developments it brings to the community and the value it adds to the people of the particular area and being part of an innovative project is a thing of joy for me,” he said.
