Fast-rising music artist, Fatimehin Abiodun known by the stage name Bonzlight has declared that music is a “No retreat, No Surrender” venture for him as he soldiers on in making it all alone without support from anyone.
Where many have quit, Bonzlight has laughed at whatever life has got to throw in his path. He is an independent artist with no care in the world but an unshakeable resolve to make it as a musician and it appears the recording and performing artist based in Dubai is making a fine job of it.
“I have been doing music myself. I have never been signed to any label. I have always been a hustler, I make my own money, and I have always been in the entertainment business.I am a complete businessman, show biz has always been for me. So I make money and use it to make one or two tracks. Life has always been hard, and I have always come up at the top. The struggle shaped me, and you can hear that struggle in my music. I am sure so many people face the same hardship and they can relate to it in my songs,” he narrated.
Bonlight describes his music as a blend of modern pop and Afrobeats sound. In fact, he prides himself on being the creator of this hybrid genre of music. According to him, his special genre is what distinguishes him from other artists out there.
“My music is a fusion of what I grew up listening to, KSA, K1 De Ultimate, Fela and Obey. It is a blend of modern pop and Afrobeats sound. It’s a special blend created by me, and it’s different and it’s my unique sound,” he said.
His musical diversity stems from his belief that an artist should not be limited to one particular genre. He believes music is an experiment that should be explored, create and recreate to display an ingenious talent
“I do Afrobeats with a fusion of anything with an African sound. I don’t think artists should stick to one sound, you should experiment, just like Davido moved from Naija Afrobeats to South African sound. I like the way he is flexible. There are 2Baba and Sound Sultan, may his soul rest in perfect peace. My music is like that but with more fusion of Fuji and Juju,” he said.
Early last year he stirred up the emotions of music lovers with a single titled “Update” featuring Eleniyan & Stunna.
Presently, he is all set to drop a four-track Extension Play (EP) titled “Smooth Operator” consisting of tracks like Smooth Operator, African Girl, Stronger and I Pray.
Bonzlight has won awards at the African Music Festival in the United Arab Emirates where he is based now.
“I fly the Nigerian flag with pride,” he quipped
