Otedola bridge accident, political rally lock down Lagos

Otedola bridge accident

Ladipo traders resume trading, parking on the road

It was a hectic day for commuters in Lagos, yesterday, as a trailer carrying a crane overturned on the Otedola bridge near Alausa Secretariat, Lagos causing severe logjam along Lagos –Ibadan Expressway.

The accident occurred when the low-bed truck without a registration number was involved in a solitary accident. The Guardian gathered that the driver was trying to avoid collision with a broken down trailer.

Although, no life was lost at the scene of the incident, the driver sustained injury to the right ankle. But the situation led to the barricade of the entire road as recovery effort led to a spill over to Iyana-Oworo.

All vehicular movement from Secretariat was diverted from the Lagos-Ibadan expressway to CMD-Magodo road to link underneath Otedola bridge, inward Berger.

Many motorists who took the Ikorodu alternative route were also trapped in traffic as supporters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) locked down Ikeja Government Reserved Area (GRA) and other parts of the state to rally support for their candidates contesting in 2023 elections.

The supporters, branded in orange cap and white t-shirt, gathered at the kick-off point in Bank Anthony Road, Ikeja, Lagos as early as 8.a.m. for the campaign.

Worried by the development, a commuter, Emmanuel Adeniyi asked the government and the Lagos State Police Command to prevail on political parties to take their campaigns off the roads in the state.

Another commuter, Edet Okon complained that the roads are also choked as some have already been taken over by motorists queuing for scarce Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in a few petrol stations with the product. He asked the authority to consider the plight of citizens and take the rallies off the road.

Responding, spokesperson for Lagos Police Command, Benjamin Hundeyin, said: “The road is not meant for political rallies. We are meeting with them. We have the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) where political parties meet and the police are part of the group. We make use of this platform to discuss the issue with them. We will keep meeting all stakeholders.

MEANWHILE, traders in Ladipo Auto-Spare market have fully returned to the service lane to ply their trade. They have disregarded the government’s directive banning them from trading, parking and repairing vehicles on the service lane of Apapa-Oshodi Expressway.

The Guardian observed that major parts of the road were taken over by the traders, thereby compounding the already hectic traffic in the metropolis.

But, spokesperson for Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Enforcement Agency (Task Force), Gbadeyan Abdulraheem said: “Task Force cannot be everywhere at the same time; it’s our duty to enforce, but the onus of maintaining orderliness is on Kick Against Indiscipline (KIA). We have raided the same place several times, but they return a few weeks after we carried out the raid.

“We have taken many of them to court, yet they return to the road, but we will not relent in our monitoring and enforcement.

“People are desirous of better things, but they are not ready to comply with the law, these same people go to London and admire the environment but they won’t replicate the same thing when they get here.”
