Okorocha wins Imo governorship election

The governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, of the All Progressives congress (APC), has been declared the winner of the keenly contested governorship election in the state. He defeated his closest opponent, Chief Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), with a total of 416,996 votes, while the latter polled 320,705.

The Chief Returning Officer and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Ikwo, Ebonyi State, Prof. Ibidapo Obe, said a total of 1,902,614 registered voters were in the state, adding that 847,996 were duly accredited.
Declaring Okorocha the winner of the election about 3a.m on Sunday, the Returning Officer said “I hereby certify that I was the Returning Officer for INEC in Imo State in the elections held on March 28, April 11 and the re-run elections held on April 25, that the candidates scored the votes as state.

“I declare that Rochas Okorocha of APC having certified the requirements of the law by scoring the highest votes is hereby declared the winner.”
Okorocha and his supporters immediately went into jubilation at the Government House, Owerri.

Recall that the elections had been declared inconclusive two weeks ago (April 11), by Obe, citing that there were over 144,000 cancelled votes, against the lead Okorocha’s lead margin of over 79,000.
