ENUGU became largely deserted, yesterday, as many residents have travelled to their villages to herald 2023.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that many parts of the state capital were empty without the usual movements and gridlock.

Only few vehicles were found on roads yesterday, just as commercial tricycles were scanty. Many shops were shut, as owners have reportedly gone to their villages.

A tricycle operator, Nwachukwu Onwe, said the situation is normal. He said: “This is what we experience every year; so, it is not new to me. On December 30, I will also travel to Ebonyi, my state.’’

Another resident, Ikechukwu Ede, also noted it is normal for people to travel to their villages not minding the bad state of the economy.

“My village is nearby; it is not difficult for me to travel. I celebrated Christmas in the village, and came back to conduct little business on Monday, and I shall be returning to celebrate the New Year.’’
