‘Technology is enhancing architectural designs’

A Lagos-based architect, Effiong Essang, has said the exponential growth in technology especially new applications and services are aiding architectural designs and processes of buildings.

Speaking to journalists in Lagos, he said known methods of designing structures have been significantly influenced by technology to increase building durability and efficiency, as well as make it simpler for architects to come up with unique structural designs that can stand the test of time.

According to Essang, the primary purpose of buildings has always been for humans to have structurally sound and environmentally controlled spaces to house, protect occupants and contents. He emphasised that technology has paved the way to visualise, modify, and implement the purpose.

He said: “Before construction began in the past, clients who hired architects had to rely on 3-D real-life models and 2-D representations to visualise what the finished project would look like. While these renderings can do this to an extent, there were restrictions.

“For instance, clients may be uncertain about their ultimate project or might want to make one or two changes after viewing and the architects would realise that this will mean recreating 3-D models or 2-D sketches from scratch. In present times, many new applications and architectural technologies have made these jobs easier and more time efficient.”

Essang added: “For 2-D sketches and 3-D modeling, architects use software tools such as Revit and Sketch. Clients can get a sense of what it will be like to move around in the building, do some interior decor, explore the various spaces, open closets, and look out from windows through the use of virtual reality headsets. In recent times, clients also demand smart technology in their buildings and homes and while these technologies are being installed in newer homes and buildings.”

To him, the profession will continue to advance alongside technology development, enhance human life, resolve long-standing issues that people face, alter how buildings are constructed and improve their functions.
