Woods set to break major records after December return

Tiger Woods is aiming to return to competitive golf by the end of the year, Woods told Charlie Rose this week on PBS.“I’m hoping to come back in December,” Woods told Rose, alluding to a possible return at the Hero World Challenge Dec. 1-4 in New Providence, Bahamas.

Woods withdrew from last week’s Safeway Open after initially targeting a return in Napa, Calif. He also announced he will skip the Turkish Airlines Open next month.

The 14-time major winner cited a lack of readiness with his game – not his surgically-repaired back – as the reason for the withdrawal. In a post on his website, Woods called his game “vulnerable.”

When Woods does return, he isn’t confident that he can break Jack Nicklaus’ record of 18 major victories.

“To be honest with you, no,” Woods said when asked if he believes he’ll get to 18 majors.

However, Woods later said, “I’ve accepted I’m going to get more,” which could mean more majors in general – or it could mean more than 18. That’s where the initial transcript ended, though Woods could have elaborated. (The episode airs yesterday night on PBS.)

Rose also asked Woods some personal questions, including about his divorce from ex-wife Elin, how he explained the split to their two children, and if he had any regrets in life. Woods’ answer was somewhat unexpected.

“The only regret I have in life is not spending another year at Stanford, and I wish I would’ve had one more year,” Woods said.“Of all the things that’s happened to you?” Rose followed.
