Following rising cases of rape and violence against women in Taraba State, the victims have been urged to confide in people around them, immediately they experience such attack.
The call, which came, yesterday, from the Alheri Centre for Women and Child Care Development (ACWCCD), in Jalingo, also urged the people to join hands with the organisation to fight the endemic perpetuated across the state and the country at large. Led by its Founder, Eglah Ibrahim, the group took its awareness campaign to the Takanabang community in Jalingo.
Ibrahim advised the victims to speak out when their rights were violated, adding that it would go a long way in encouraging the relevant authorities to bring the perpetrators to book.
While condemning the high rate of rape and other vices against women and children in the state, the group said it was optimistic that if all hands were on deck, the situation would be brought under control.
Stressing that the organisation’s goal is to care for the vulnerable, particularly women and children in rural areas, the goals, according to her, could only be achieved when victims come out and name the perpetrators.
The Communication Officer, Thomas Samuel, identified culture, politics, and socio-economic among others, as major causes of gender-based violence.
Describing the awareness campaign as an eye opener for the vulnerable persons in the community, the community women leader, Aisha Muhammad, vowed to expose perpetrators of such ills in the community.
