There was large turnout of women and children at Okpoko, in Ogbaru Council of Anambra State, as the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) commenced free medical healthcare outreach for people in the area, yesterday.

The free healthcare outreach is for women and children in seven councils ravaged by flood in 2022. Local Immunisation Officer for Ogbaru, Modesta Chukwuneke, told journalists that Okpoko is one of the centres approved for the five-day outreach where COVID-19 vaccine and immunisation would be administered to beneficiaries.

She attributed the large turn out recorded at the centre to aggressive sensitisation, adding that they have enough vaccines that can take care of 2,000 children.

According to Chukwuneke, the immunisation exercise, which would hold in 16 wards in the area, was for babies from zero to two years, while the COVID-19 vaccines were for adults yet to receive their jabs.

The Immunisation Officer stressed that the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (ASPHDA), in collaboration with UNICEF, engaged town announcers to inform people about the exercise, especially those at the hard-to-reach areas.
