Be technology savvy, women journalists told

Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Edo State chapter, yesterday, called on women journalists to upgrade their academic qualifications for future opportunities and contributions to national development.

Addressing members of the association at Edo NUJ secretariat in Benin City, Princess Habiibah Oyarekhua, who made the call, said it was in consonance with the years International Women’s Day’s theme: “DigitALL: Innovation And Technology For Gender Equality.”

She said: “Women are intelligent and if you all develop your digital intelligence and sustain it, I tell you, women, in no time, will overtake men. Women are smart and if given the opportunity to deliver on deadline, women deliver on deadline and they are more honest than men.”

On gender equality, she commended the working-class women, who, despite the challenge of their works, still keep the home front.

She charged women journalists to use their media houses to advocate equality in workplaces.

“There must be a major paradigm shift. Men are the heads of women but can the head stand without the neck? Women are meant to love and obey their husbands in the home, but in workplaces, a man must not earn more than a woman because he is a man, rather it should be based on qualifications and experience,” Oyarekhua said.

Earlier, Blessing Eromo, who spoke on Criminal Justice, acknowledged the importance of media in enlightening the public on access to justice.

According to her, media professionals are to be equipped with ACJA provisions on Criminal Justice to enable them educate the public adequately.

She further called on women journalists to develop the act of writing features on issues relating to criminal justice to enable the people be in tune with the demands of the law.

Chairperson, Edo NAWOJ, Adesuwa Ehimuan, commended women journalists for their commitment to the growth of the association.
