Kano State Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has disclosed that his administration has pardoned about 4,013 inmates in eight years across the state’s correctional facilities.
Accordingly, the outgoing administration has equally expended over N4m on fines and compensations for the release of repentant inmates within the period under review.
Ganduje made the disclosure, yesterday, at Goron Dutse Correctional Facility, where he offered administrative pardon to 43 inmates on jail term. The governor’s visit was parts of his traditional Eid-el-Fitri celebration
Ganduje, represented by his Deputy, Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna, emphasised that the perogative of mercy was extended to inmates, especially those that exhibited good character and ready to turn a new leaf.
Earlier, the Controller of the Correctional Service in the state, Suleiman Muhammad Inuwa, explained that the gesture offered by the Kano State government would assist in decongesting the facilities and ensure peaceful atmosphere in the yard.
He appealed to other states to emulate the gesture and also urged the beneficiaries to be good ambassadors and law abiding citizens through displaying good behaviour.
However, Ganduje also enjoined the incoming government to ensure the completion of all viable projects embarked upon by his administration, which time could not permit him to complete.
He added that since government is all about continuity, he reminded that no public project executed with public fund should be abandoned by successive government.
Ganduje, in a statement by Commissioner for Information, Mohammad Garba, stressed that he “holds no grudge against anybody in his eight-year stewardship.”
