
• Obaseki asks Nigerians to keep faith with democracy despite setbacks
Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has felicitated with Deltans and Nigerians on this year’s Democracy Day.
Oborevwori, in a goodwill message through his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, in Asaba, said Deltans and Nigerians should celebrate this year’s
Democracy Day in view of the smooth, peaceful and successful transition from one civil administration to another.
He stated that Nigeria’s democracy is waxing stronger, especially with improvements in the nation’s electoral laws, urging citizens to take advantage of these reforms to choose leaders of their choice for good governance.
Oborevwori said: “As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, it is important that we pay tribute to all those who risked their lives in the struggle to end military dictatorship and enthrone democracy in the country. They are heroes of our democracy, and it is my prayer that their sacrifices would not be in vain.
“We thank God that since the return of democracy in 1999, we have had 24 years of unbroken civil rule; Nigerians have enjoyed the opportunity to elect leaders of their choice for the purpose of good governance.
“Here, in Delta, we have been fortunate and privileged, as a political party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to have had mandate to pilot affairs of the state since 1999.”
ASLO, governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), in the state, Kenneth Gbagi, has called on Nigerians, particularly Deltans, to be optimistic about the future of Nigeria and Delta State despite challenges facing the nation today.
Gbagi, made the appeal in his goodwill message, yesterday, by his Chief Press Secretary, Kenneth Orusi, on the occasion of the nation’s Democracy Day.
SIMILARLY, the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has urged Nigerians to keep faith with democracy despite setbacks experienced in the country’s democratic journey.
In a statement to commemorate this year’s Democracy Day, the governor hailed the resolve of Nigerians to work collectively for the advancement of democratic ideals.
He said: “As we mark this year’s Democracy Day, it is imperative to underscore the unwavering resolve of Nigerians to work collectively for advancement of democratic ideals in our nation.
“Despite the challenges we faced, we have held strongly to the vision of our forebears to build a united and strong nation that presents an opportunity for all to aspire, dream and prosper.
“We have shown our preference for democratic rule, and I urge all to continue to play their role in consolidating on our democratic journey.
