A coalition of civil society organisations on national and community security developments has called on President Ahmed Tinubu to shun political considerations in the appointment of his National Security Adviser (NSA).

Addressing newsmen in Abuja, yesterday, the group charged the Nigerian leader to take cognisance of the huge security challenges besetting the nation and refused being politically influenced in the choice of the next NSA.

In a statement issued by the convener/Executive Director, Centre for Strategy Ethics and Value, Romanus Azubuike ugwu and Executive Director, The People’s Care And Advocacy Initiative (TPCAI), Danladi Garba Isaac, the coalition appealed: “Mr. President, Sir. This is not the time to use the appointment of NSA for political compensation, but for national re-architecture and engineering of security systems.

These are no normal times. Nigeria’s current security challenges are daunting. There is no room for mediocrity and lukewarmneess. A tried and tested hand, who has transformed or built a national security and diplomatic outfit, will be a good fit.

“There is no time for theoreticians and office workers. It is urgent and critical. There is a crying need for complete transformative change in Nigeria’s security architecture.”

The group urged the President Tinubu to consult widely with a view to putting a round peg in a round hole.  Tinubu is also tasked on an NSA with vast knowledge to deal with the burgeoning issues of banditry, kidnapping, farmer-herdsmen clashes, illegal mining and oil bunkering that have assumed astronomical and intolerable heights.

The coalition argued that these issues must be handled by not just a competent man in military security, but also a proactive and bold personality that understands the security architecture of the nation.
