NAPTIP decries sale of children by S’East orphanages

National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has expressed worry over proliferation of illegal orphanages that sell children to highest bidders in the South East.

Director General of the agency, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, urged leaders, stakeholders and people of the zone to rise against the menace to save children.

Speaking in Enugu at an event, tagged, ‘Medical Outreach Support for Victims of Human Trafficking’, organised by the agency with support from International Centre For Migration Policy Development (ICMPD), Waziri-Azi explained that illegal orphanages pretend to be offering services but engage in sale of babies and children.

Representing the Director, Counselling and Rehabilitation, Angela Agbayekhai, she said female children are sold between N500,000 and N1 million, while the males are sold at higher prices.

She expressed happiness that the agency has been recording tremendous successes in bursting the syndicate, adding that they are working hard to tackle the development.

Speaking on behalf of ICMPD, Adeniyi  Bakre explained that the programme was funded by the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
