A: Belle Femme’s journey is truly a testament to adaptability and resilience. We kicked off our venture 16 years ago, importing ready-to-wear items from the USA and UK. But in 2015, we faced a significant hurdle. A steep rise in exchange rates disrupted our operations and left us at a crossroads. We chose to see the situation as an opportunity rather than a setback, and so we decided to pivot. We transitioned to sourcing and producing locally, fully embracing afro-centric fashion. This change not only supported our local economy but also allowed us to bring an authentic Nigerian flair to our collections.
When the COVID-19 lockdown hit in 2020, we took this as a further chance to innovate. We launched TheShop5kStore, an affordable fashion line that caters to every woman’s needs without stretching their budget. In the face of adversity, we found the inspiration to serve our community better and provide affordable, quality fashion for every Nigerian woman.
Q: It must have been quite a challenge to transition your business model and expand your market reach. How did you navigate this change?
A: Indeed, the journey was not an easy one. As we ventured into a more localized model and contemplated scaling up, we realized the enormous potential of digital transformation.
