• Yoruba Ronu, Afenifere laud Tinubu on change of service chiefs
• Say change will salvage, reset Nigeria adroitly
• Go after enemies of Nigeria’s democracy, HURIWA tells new police boss
Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has congratulated the newly-appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun.
Abiodun, in a statement, said the elevation of Egbetokun and others was well-deserved, as they possessed the competence to excel in their new positions.
He said the appointment of the Acting IGP is an honour to Ogun State, adding that the new police boss, having worked in various commands, formations and departments of the police nationwide, would bring his wealth of experience to bear on the job.
Abiodun said: “I congratulate Kayode Egbetokun on his elevation. This is an honour done to us in Ogun State.
“I am confident that Egbetokun will bring his wealth of experience, garnered over the years, to bear on his new assignment. Our people are noted for hard work, competence and dignity.
“I believe that the new IGP will meet the expectations of Nigerians in bequeathing a competent, trustworthy, accountable, courageous and honest police force to the nation.”
The governor praised Tinubu for the confidence reposed in Egbetokun in recognition of his competence and capacity to deliver.
Meanwhile, a South-West socio-political group, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, has applauded the new appointment of security chiefs.
The group said the appointment specifically relates to federal character principles and the need to strengthen our weak diversity.
President of the forum, Akin Malaolu, said the appointment equally achieved what was most important and uppermost, which are inclusiveness, fairness but in particular, the appointment of an Igbo officer into a very strategic position in the security architecture of the country.
Also, the pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, yesterday, lauded Tinubu for changing security chiefs, saying the change would salvage and reset the country adroitly.
In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the organisation said the spate of insecurity made the change expedient.
In another development, Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has urged Egbetokun to go after enemies of Nigeria’s democracy.
HURIWA National Coordinator, Emmanuel Onwubiko, while addressing newsmen in Abuja, urged the new police boss to protect Nigeria’s democracy by displaying zero tolerance for corrupt practices.
He said the Acting IGP had displayed enthusiasm for his office and should not disappoint Nigerians by relaxing on his constitutional powers.
According to him, the Acting IGP should protect democracy by stopping forgery in Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
“Smarting from the ecstasy of his high profile selection as the acting IGP, the man, so neatly dressed, spoke glowingly about the expectation of his new higher calling. He showed enthusiasm and made initial pledges of commitments to duty,” he said.
He, however, urged the acting IGP to wade into a petition sent to his office regarding the senatorial election in Ebonyi State and probe the damning allegations.
