The incident, which The Guardian gathered, occurred on Saturday about 11p.m., lasted till the wee hours of Sunday.
It came few days after the state government met with stakeholders from areas affected by insecurity on how to effectively tackle the challenge.
Hundreds of people have been killed, abducted for ransom, raped, maimed or had their communities ransacked by terrorists in recent months in parts of the state.
According to sources, the terrorists, armed with sophisticated weapons, came in large number and headed straight to the vigilante leader’s house.
They reportedly shot two people in the process, abducted and molested three women before releasing them hours later.
A vigilante group member, who asked not to be named, said the attack might be a reprisal, as the terrorists had earlier accused the deceased of leading his members to destroy their hideout in the forest.
He said: “The terrorists arrived the community in large number and proceeded to the residence of our commander. They blocked all routes to prevent him from escaping.
“After a painstaking search, they found him under a tree and engaged him in a gun duel until he ran out of ammunition. He was then rounded up and butchered in a compound where he sought refuge.”
Spokesperson for Katsina police command, ASP Abubakar Sadiq, confirmed the incident to newsmen, yesterday.
Abubakar, however, said information about the incident did not get to the police on time due to heavy downpour and poor telecommunications network at the time.
He added that police had commenced investigation into the matter, and that efforts were ongoing to arrest the culprits.
