• Says ethnic agenda won’t fly

Ahead of the November 11 governorship election in Kogi State, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has continued to gain significant support from politicians, with the defection of opposition politicians to its fold.

Governor Yahaya Bello, yesterday, received PDP members from Olamaboro Local Council, led by Senator Atai Aidoko Usman, into APC. Bello, who commended the defectors for their courageous decision to join the ruling party and contribute to the state’s development, reiterated his commitment to inclusive government, in which both longstanding and new APC members are afforded equal opportunities to work towards the overall welfare of the people.

The governor emphasised the significance of unity among ethnic groups within the state. Acknowledging the division that existed along ethnic lines when he assumed office, Bello expressed satisfaction that his administration successfully united the people towards a common goal, considering the achievement as a lasting legacy.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Usman stressed that the agenda before the people was National Political Integration, wherein individuals could actively participate in prominent roles that would bring honour and glory to the state.

The senator emphasised the need for broad-based coalition that transcends party and ethnic lines, for the overall progress and development of Kogi. Usman criticised the proponents of ethnic agenda, describing them as narrow-minded and detrimental to the state’s advancement.

He advocated a more inclusive approach that would prioritise the interests of Kogi residents, irrespective of their ethnic background. By rejecting divisive politics and embracing a broader vision, the senator believes that Kogi can achieve greater unity and collective prosperity. He highlighted Governor Yahaya Bello’s influential position within the ruling party at both the federal and state levels, asserting that the governor serves as the bridge to link Kogi into mainstream national politics.

While commending Bello for his administration’s achievements, the senator urged him to faithfully pursue his vision for a greater Kogi, free from myopic agenda. The delegation pledged unwavering to the governor.

Drawing on his over 16 years’ experience in both chambers of the National Assembly, the lawmaker vowed to utilise his political capital across the state, particularly in Kogi East, to ensure victory for the APC candidate in the November 11 governorship election. The delegation comprised the pioneer state secretary of the defunct Action Congress of Nigeria, former chairman of PDP in Olamaboro, ward chairmen and secretaries, among others.
