Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), yesterday, called on aggrieved candidates who have already filed cases at various election petition tribunals to wait patiently for verdict, even as it said Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) performed well within the limit of its resources and infrastructural constraints through introduction of technology.
National chairman, Yabagi Yusuf Sani, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja, urged President Bola Tinubu and the National Assembly to support INEC in deployment of technology for future polls, to reduce post-election disagreements and litigations.
He said: “IPAC, which is not an opposition party or a mouthpiece of the ruling party, will refrain from indulging in the passion, sentiments and bias that have characterised most comments and observations on the European Union Election Observation Mission (EU-EOM) report.
“Rather, IPAC will give the Mission and its report the benefit of doubt and take the position that some of the recommendations are useful and should be considered in preparation and conduct of future elections in Nigeria.”
“Undoubtedly, some of the outcomes in the election attest to the benefits of increased usage and efficient deployment of technology. The outcomes of the election produced the most diverse legislature since 1999, with nine of the 18 political parties winning legislative seats (seven in the Senate, eight in the House of Representatives and nine in state Houses of Assembly).”
He added: “The credibility of the election is underscored by the fact that in some states of the federation, the House of Assembly is dominated by members from political parties different from that of the executive, besides unpredictable outcome wherein many candidates, including incumbent state governors, lost in their constituencies.
“Furthermore, the election witnessed an uptick in participation of youth, Persons with Disability (PwDs) and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), which can be attributed to deliberate policy of INEC to mobilise them and facilitate their participation. INEC should be commended for these accomplishments.”
