Accuses leaders of breaching party’s constitution on positions
The National Vice Chairman (North West) of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Salihu Lukman, has resigned his membership of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.
His decision may not be unconnected with his opposition to ongoing moves to install former Governor of Kano State, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, as National Chairman of the party.
Lukman had said that the decision, which enjoys the full support of President Bola Tinubu, was in breach of the party’s zoning arrangement, which reserved the exalted seat to North Central geo-political zone of the country.
However, in his resignation letter addressed to the Acting National Chairman of the party, Abubakar Kyari, Lukman said he took the decision based on his conviction that the atmosphere in the party is completely at variance with the founding vision of forming a progressive party.
“Rather than remaining in the leadership of the party and becoming a source of distraction for leaders, it is better to excuse myself and take time off from politics,” he said.
“I will, however, retain my membership of the party in the hope that our leaders, especially President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, will retract from acts that will be unjust and illegal, which is crucial to any claim of being democratic or progressive whether as politicians or as patriotic Nigerians,” he said.
Lukman, who expressed gratitude to former Governor of Kaduna State, Malam Nasir el-Rufai, for finding him worthy of nomination to serve at the highest level of the party’s leadership, wished the party and its leaders all the best.
He said he would continue to give his modest support towards the success of the party from the background.
