
President of Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Maikyau and former Minister of Education in Nigeria, Oby Ezekwesili, on Wednesday, advised lawyerys to satisfied temple of Justice in the judiciary.
Maikyau, disclosed this in Abuja, at an annual lecture series in memory of former Minister of Science and Technology, late, Samuel Momah, with the theme, ‘the Temple of Justice in Nigeria: Scarred or Sacred’ organized by the Sam Momah Foundation (SMF) to celebrate the highlight of what he stood for while he lived.
He said that absence of the judiciary in Nigeria will amount to absence of the nation.
He said: “The responsibility of delivering and recovery for reponsition of Nigerian belongs to the lawyers. The lawyers must be at the vanguard of this responsibility, Because Nigeria is important to all.
“Laws, Nigeria itself is the constitution, what gives us the basis for our existence sitting down here and having this meeting it is regulated by law. And we are the ones who are privileged to be instructed on the subject we understand.
“We can see injustice walk on these two feet and identified and we are the ones to provide the remedy were one is find, and so, it is for us to take charge and be at the vanguard of what we need to do to keep this country together.”
Ezekwesili said: “Talking about the temple of justice in Nigeria scourge of sacred, anyone of us should know that one important element that determines the healthiness of society, is everything about the rule of law, and the independence of the judiciary.”
While presenting the book, ‘A General and Gentleman the last 20 years of Sam Momah,’ The Chairman of the Sam Momah Foundation, an Associate Professor University of Mississippi Medical Center, Tobe Momah, “I know they’re still the good eggs, but it looks as if the bad eggs have painted the wrong picture for the judiciary. We need to go back to the days of integrity.
“So, we will have people who could say I have come to the temple of justice with clean hands, our motivation for this topic is to stair up the judiciary to be a temple again, up the judiciary to be a temple again, where people can come and expect justice, jurisprudence and equality. ”
He added, “Nigeria leaders need to change their mentality they are not lords, we have a leadership in Nigeria that see themselves as lords not as servants and learners , they need to sit with the people they govern and see how they can serve them. ”
One of his sons, Dr. Nkem Momah, also said that reading culture needed to be promoted in the country, added that the “Libraries will warehouse not only the published materials authored by the late Sam Momah but wide range of educational materials needed to groom the next generation of leaders in Nigeria.”
He noted that the foundation has established reading rooms ‘Library’ in Abuja, Enugu, and ‘soon to be established’ Lagos, to serve as an impetus toward establishment of specialized reading rooms across the country.
He said: “The Foundation organizes reading and essay writing competitions among students across Nigeria and donate books to different libraries and schools with the intentionofbulding human development quotient capacity in the next generation.
“Due to a paucity of reading rooms, many youth don’t have the needed level of privacy and opportunity for lively discussions and the foundation has pioneered the establishment of reading rooms in Nigeria’s institutions.”
