Titled, “My Father The Emir – A Portrait of Ado Bayero,” the two-hour, 10 minutes documentary chronicles the rise of a prince who would become the longest reigning monarch in the history of the Fulani Caliphate, in the ancient city of Kano.
Zainab, a first-time filmmaker said that she decided to debut with her father’s life story because he remains an iconic figure in the history of the nation.
“I got the inspiration from my mum because I was going through different ideas for my first movie. She gave me the idea, to begin with my dad, who she said remains a great subject. I want people to watch the documentary and realise that the Kano and Fulani dynasty is a beautiful, enduring culture, and my dad symbolised this dynasty.”
Speaking on her relationship with her father, she said: “I had a beautiful relationship with him, I remember him as an enigma and a charismatic leader. He is a loving and a very gentle man.”
Zainab added that she hopes to work on more documentaries in the future, as there are interesting subjects to cover.
