The police in Ogun, yesterday, arrested five suspected cultists terrorising the Aboro area of the state. The Guardian learnt that the suspects: Adetayo Ismaila, ‘m’, 42; Kunle Oluwole, ‘m’, 37; Ibrahim Ademosun, ‘m’, 31; Meshach Olaide, ‘m’, 31; and Dare Kehinde, ‘m’, 35, have confessed to various crimes, including murder.

Confirming the development, spokesperson for Ogun State Police Command, Superintendent of Police (SP), Omolola Odutola, said the suspects were arrested based on a distress call received from a concerned citizen, who narrated how the community had remained threatened by the endless panic constituted by the hooligans.

According to her, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Awoniyi Adekunle Isaac, together with other security agencies, embarked on an aggressive raid, following the credible source, patrolling around and within the Matogun community, which led to the arrest of the suspected cultists.

“The suspects were in a hideout that the source described for Isaac, they were known for fomenting trouble in that locality.

“These set of cultists attacked the DPO and his team, who went to rescue one Ogwu Uzoma, ‘m’, presently under medical attention at Ayodele Hospital, Matogun. He was brutally injured by the suspected cultist.

“They had earlier boasted that they will kill him if Uzoma did not clear out the monies in his account and give to them.

“Dangerous items recovered include, broken bottles, cutlasses, knife and significant amount of cannabis, pointing to the fact that they are under the influence of hard drugs.

“Investigation revealed that they are members of Aiye confraternity and have been instrumental in a series of early morning attacks, waylaying persons who closed from night duty on their way back home.

“The CP has been briefed and has ordered that they are immediately charged to court to face the criminal justice system,” she added. Similarly, the state’s Pin Down Team, inaugurated by the Commissioner of Police (CP), Alamutu Abiodun, has arrested two suspects involved in a series of killings in Ilaro Division.

The Pin Down Team, led by Inspector Sunday Adeyemo, arrested one Esube, ‘m’, during a patrol of Okeganmu in Ilaro Division. Osunmuyiwa Solomon, ‘m’, was also arrested after a revelation from Esube that both of them had been involved in a series of killings in their area.

Esube was arrested along Papa Road with an unregistered Bajaj motorcycle, with a nylon bag, and one Omowunmi Fiyakola, a passenger. Esube refused to adhere to the team’s stop and search, and raced off. He was pursued and arrested, after a thorough search; one locally fabricated pistol loaded with cartridges was found and recovered from his bag.

A police source said: “The suspect was violent with the driver of the police vehicle, by struggling with the steering in a bid to escape, he equally gave the police driver a poisonous bite on his right finger, which led to the burst of the tyres as the vehicle lost control.

“Esube attempted to take to his heels, but was maimed on his right thigh eventually taming him to submission and the policemen captured him to the Police Station.

“He has made confessional statements as being a member of a notorious confraternity, and that the unregistered Bajaj motorcycle was stolen by him.

“He will be charged to court for murder, stealing, and possession of firearms.”
