Seven persons, yesterday, sustained injuries when a commercial bus driver fleeing from tax collectors somersaulted at Nwagu junction, Agulu in Anaocha Local Council of Anambra State.

Eyewitness said the incident involved a shuttle bus heading to Ekwuluobia with seven passengers.

The Guardian learnt that the driver lost control while fleeing from a team of illegal revenue agents.

According to the eyewitness, who spoke on condition of anonymity, the driver skidded off the road when one of the agents threw a heavy stone on the vehicle.

“While they were pursuing the bus, one of the touts threw a heavy stone at the driver. He suddenly lost control and veered off the road, somersaulting in the process.

“All the passengers on board were left with different injuries, while the driver is in a critical condition,” the eyewitness said.

Transition Committee Chairman of Anaocha Local Council, Gerald Ozoh, who confirmed the accident, announced a temporary ban on collection of all forms of revenue within the council until proper investigations are conducted to ascertain the real revenue agents of the government.

Ozoh, who visited the scene, condemned activities of illegal revenue agents in the area.

He said the police in the area have commenced investigation to identify those involved in the act.
Ozoh said the administration of Prof. Chukwuma Soludo’s government was not in support of any form of illegal revenue collection, and called on residents to join the government in stopping the act.

He charged motorists plying the area to be law abiding and report activities of any revenue agent within the council to his office, hinting that one suspected revenue agent has been arrested in connection with the crash.

As at press time, spokesperson for Anambra State Police Command, Tochukwu Ikenga, was yet to respond to the issue.
