Women, made up of mostly the internally-displaced persons, yesterday, protested the killing of three farmers by herdsmen at Ngban community in Benue State.
Ngban is a road-side settlement along the Makurdi – Lafia Road. This year alone, the Ngban community has suffered several attacks by militant herdsmen leading to the death of scores of peasant farmers with the most fatal attack on April 7, 2023 when over 36 persons were killed in one single attack.
A few weeks earlier, six persons were killed, including three members of the state security outfit, the Benue Community Volunteer Guards.
Yesterday’s attack in which three farmers were killed, led to protest and blockage of the Federal Highway linking the state with Nassarawa State at the Igyungu Ortese point, thus obstructing traffic in the community and its environs.
The Benue State Governor, Rev Fr Hyacinth Alia had sent a delegation of traditional rulers of the area led by the Ter Guma, His Royal Highness Dennis Shemberga and the District Head of Nyiev, Chief Bernard Shawa, to plead with the women to vacate the road pending when the governor would address the problem.
As at the time of filing this report, repeated calls to the Benue State Police Public Relations Officer, Supol Catherine Anene, to confirm the story were unanswered.
