Navy To Establish Base In Enugu

The Defence Headquarters has frowned at a report calling on the military to interfere in Nigeria’s democracy, saying it is highly unpatriotic, wicked, and an attempt to distract the armed forces of Nigeria from performing its constitutional responsibility.

According to defence spokesman, Brig. General Tukur Gusau: “The Defence Headquarters frowns at a report being circulated online about welfare issues in the armed forces of Nigeria because its leadership prioritises welfare of its personnel.

“We detest any attempt by individuals or groups to instigate law-abiding members of the armed forces of Nigeria to embark on any unconstitutional change of government in our country.

“We wish to state unequivocally that the military is happy and better under democracy and will not get involved in any act to sabotage the hard-earned democracy in our country.

“The armed forces under the leadership of the Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa is determined to ensure complete subordination of the armed forces to constitutional authority under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and will not be distracted from its roles that are well defined in the 1999 constitution.”

Meanwhile, the Nigerian Navy has announced plans to establish an operational base in Enugu State to improve the protection of lives and property around the state’s coastal areas.

The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ikechukwu Ogalla, disclosed in Enugu during his visit to the state, yesterday.  He further noted that Enugu State has a navigable river around Uzo Uwani Local Council, revealing plans to extend Naval operations to encompass and cover the broader spectrum of the state. He observed that the corridor had a seaport during the colonial era, but has been abandoned.

Ogalla, who sought the support of Enugu State government, said: “Our operations there will be aimed at providing internal security operations both through area surveillance and patrol in such a manner that economic activities can thrive without hindrance.”
