Four persons were injured yesterday, during armed robbery attacks at three different female hostels in Rivers State University (RSU), Port Harcourt.
The Guardian gathered that the incident occurred at hostels C, D and NDDC boarding house between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m. Thursday morning.
It was also learnt that the hoodlums stole students’ valuables, including laptops, phones, POS, midgets, monies, among others, and attempted to rape some of the students. Those injured are currently receiving treatment at the hospital at press time.
Meanwhile, the female students, who were worried about recurring attacks on them, have staged a peaceful protest calling on the school authorities, and the state government to rise to the occasion and beef up security in the institution.
One of the protesters, who pleaded anonymity, said: “It was late at night. The moment I raised my bed net to bring out my head, I just received a hot slap on my ears from one of the hoodlums and he hit me with a machete on my leg twice, before I was able to escape.”
Another student said: “They attempted raping some students, they used guns and were harassing us. This is not the first time, second time, or even the third time, and the school is not doing anything about it. They made away with Point of Sales (POS) machines, gadgets, phones, and laptops.”
The protesting students further accused the school authority of negligence and extortions instead of improving security situations in the institution.
“If you are seen wearing short dresses, and open clothes, they will tell you to pay a fine of N5,000, but they could not come out yesterday when the boys were robbing us.
“Only the female ‘Man O War’ tried to help, but the school security could not do anything.
“We are not safe anymore, give us security, stop harassing us, stop the extortion,” the students lamented.
Meanwhile, the President of the National Students Union, RSU Chapter, Michael Ebo, who addressed the students, said the school authorities had stepped in and handling the matter.
He said: “We cannot on our own allow such things to happen. The school management has been able to address all of these. They made a promise of replacing the stolen phones in less than 24 hours to students, who lost their phones and to improve security in the school.
“The school authority is working to ensure all necessary things are put in place to increase the welfare of the students.”
Also, the Public Relations Officer of the School, Emeka Ebuchi, confirmed that the school is aware of the incident, stating that investigations were ongoing.
