The Lion’s Club, District 404-B4, has pledged to build a vocational centre to train youths in various skills to reduce the high rate of unemployment and crimes among youths in the country.
It also pledged to provide the required equipment, materials and start-up grants for the youths.
The Pioneer District Governor, Samson Abodunrin, gave the pledge at a public presentation held in Lagos.
He said the project, which is expected to cost over N150 million when completed, would train over 500 youths and widows in the first year of its operation.
“There is no gainsaying that it is a huge commitment but it is doable. We all know that the country is faced with a serious challenge of unemployment, starvation, poverty and economic crisis. The world is in a state of chaos but amid all the turmoil, there are moments of hope and inspiration,” Abodunrin said.
He added that the club bought 10 grinding machines for the widows and exercise books for public school pupils.
“There are lots of widows who want to do something but they don’t have the resources to start up. We believe that with this, the women will be able to have a daily income to feed their family. And we’re also giving them a start-up grant to add to the machine so that they will be able to rent a place.
“We have about 3,000 exercise books that will be given out of the various regions, which by the time the schools resume; they will go to the public schools in their community. They will identify children, who cannot pay for exercise books and writing materials. This will also be distributed to them,” he added.
The immediate past District Governor, Kema Ashibuogwu, who challenged other members not to stop serving humanity, said: “Do not stop serving because the greatness of service comes from your willingness to assist the less privileged.”
