Discover the will of God for you – Part 43

Emeritus Prof. Mercy Olumide

We may not conquer nations, but everyday we face tough situations, difficult people, and temptations. However, God promises that he will never abandon us or fail to help us. By asking God to direct us we can conquer many of life’s challenges.

“I will be with you.” God’s foundational promise to Joshua—“I will be with you; I will not fail you, nor forsake you”—is likewise God’s commitment to all believers during their journey and conquests faith (Mat 28:20; Heb 13:5-6; cf. Deut 31:6; see Ex 3:14). God’s abiding presence with us is now a reality through His Son (Mat 1:23) and the gift of the Holy Spirit (Luke 24:49).
In Joshua 1:6-8 many people think that prosperity and success come from having power, influential personal contacts, and a relentless desire to get ahead. But the strategy for gaining prosperity that God taught Joshua goes against such criteria.

He said that to succeed Joshua must:
• be strong and courageous because the task ahead would not be easy.
• obey God’s law.
• and constantly read and study the Book of the Law—God’s Word.

To be successful, follow God’s words to Joshua. You may not succeed by the world’s standards, but you will be a success in God’s eyes—and his opinion lasts forever.
Joshua1:7-8 How strange to equate success with obedience. For many, success is controlling others; for Joshua it meant being controlled by God. God told Joshua that to succeed he must obey the rules for living found in God’s law. Often we can’t see what the results or future benefits of following God will be. When we are not certain what to do, obedience to what God has revealed in the scriptures is the only sure step we can take.

Resolve to set aside time each day to read and think about God’s word. Remind yourself of God’s words day and night. Act today on what you know God has said in Phil 3:16 and God will assure your success in carrying out his purposes.

Joshua1:7 observe…all the law. In order to possess the Promised land, Joshua and the Israelites had to commit themselves to obey God’s written word. The word of God written in the “Book of the Law” (i.e., Scripture, v. 8) was to be their central authority as opposed to all human ideas, tradition or religions; this principle is applicable to believers under both the old and new covenants.

Joshua1:8 this Book of the Law. In Joshua’s time the phrase refers to the first five books of the Bible, which record God’s words, commandments and revelation to Moses (cf. Deut 31:9-12, 24-26) Joshua was to be faithful to God’s word by talking about it (cf. Deut 6:7), meditating on it (cf. Ps 1:2; 119:97) and obeying it fully (cf. Ezra 7:10; Jas 1:22-25).
