LAWMA, Alliance sensitise Mushin residents on proper waste management

Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) and Food and Beverage Recycling Alliance (FBRA) have sensitised Mushin residents on proper waste management.

The sensitisation, which took place at Ojuwoye Market Mushin, was in commemoration of the 2023 World Clean-up Day.

The event had about 100 representatives from LAWMA, FBRA member companies and volunteers who cleaned up the market.

FBRA members engaged in the clean-up, community sensitisation and buyback of recyclables, while company products were given as incentives to community inhabitants in exchange for recyclables during this event.

A total of 82.2kg of Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), and 3.2kg of other recyclables were collected via buy-back scheme and 29 bags of general solid wastes were collected at the event.

Representing LAWMA, Akinbulo Ayobanmi, spoke on the agency’s commitment to ensure a waste-free Lagos.

He expressed his delight towards the clean-up, community engagement and awareness organised by FBRA and the impact it would have on the community.

Community members and the market sellers expressed their gratitude to FBRA for bringing the clean-up to their community as they have never experienced a buy-back initiative before.

The clean-up amplified the importance of clean and sustainable environmental practices through accelerated community engagement and corporate actions to hasten the transition to a plastic-pollution-free society. Community members were encouraged to continue to emulate the practices of source segregation and proper waste disposal practices demonstrated by FBRA, as this will drive the attainment of a clean environment and a waste-free Lagos.

The community was left in high spirits as they spoke about their commitment to practicing proper waste disposal as individuals and as a community through services provided by an Indigenous collector.

FBRA was registered in March 2018 as the Industry coalition for the Food and Beverage Sector, the packaging producer responsibility organisation to implement the extended producer responsibility in Nigeria.

The Alliance has members drawn from responsible and forward-thinking companies, which includes Nigerian Bottling Company Plc, Nigerian Breweries Plc, SevenUp Bottling Company Limited, Nestle Nigeria Plc and Guinness Nigeria Plc, among others.
