Yoruba group laments, scores Tinubu government low

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the United States.

Southeast socio-political group, Yoruba Ronu Leadership Forum, which had earlier predicted that the exchange rate would rise to N1000 to a dollar by September 2023, has again called on the government of President Bola Tinubu to take proactive measures prevent the exchange rate from depreciating to N1,200 to one dollar by December this year and possibly N2000 to one dollar by September 2024.

Speaking with The Guardian, yesterday, the President of the forum, Akin Malaolu, said: “The truth is that this administration is not just managing the economy well in the best interest of Nigerians.

“We have followed the instructions and encouragements made by President Tinubu and also his dearest wife, urging Nigerians in the Diaspora to return home. Though we should be happy over such encouraging words from the first family, since the coming of Tinubu’s administration, what exactly has changed in the country? What changes in Nigeria have we measured that could be seen to give hope to those in the Diaspora to come home.

“Just recently, over 50 military officers were ambushed and killed, another eight state agents were similarly put to unnecessary death, farmers, peasants, church men and women are being killed daily while our uniformed men and women are looking perplexed.”

On the economy, the group said many opportunities suddenly disappeared due to wrong economic policies hurriedly used as formula to grow the economy.

“Propaganda is a common feature in the present administration, both at the state and the federal levels. The conditions of things and poverty are in a state of egregious nonsense within the doldrums of stunted growth. The subsidy removal came with nothing to cushion effects of withdrawal, while depreciation of the naira could once again bring more despair if petrol pump prices should go up again. New minimum wage appears scary to the government, hence the continued foot-dragging.”

The group accused the President of reforming the economy without fighting against corruption, endemic at all the levels of governance in the country.

“We are compelled to warn Nigerians in the Diaspora to make quality interrogation with those at home before boarding to make it back home,” the group added.
