What are the challenges facing Nigeria’s tourism sector, and how has that affected your operation?

Nigeria’s tourism sector holds immense potential, but it also faces several challenges. Infrastructure deficits, security concerns, inadequate marketing efforts, poor tourism management structure, insufficient investment, leadership and governance issues, and a lack of political will have been persistent obstacles. These challenges affect not only the sector but also our operations at Wakanow.com.

Infrastructure deficits impact the ease of travel within the country, making it challenging for tourists to access various attractions. Security concerns, though improving, have occasionally deterred potential travellers. Moreover, the lack of comprehensive marketing efforts has hindered the sector’s ability to showcase Nigeria’s diverse offerings.

Tourism development requires significant investments in infrastructure, hospitality facilities, and marketing campaigns. The limited availability of funds for such investments, both from the government and private sector, hinders the growth of the sector. This mostly leaves us to fill the gaps left by inadequate investment in infrastructure and services.

The commitment of the government to support and promote tourism is crucial. A lack of political will to prioritize the tourism sector can result in missed opportunities for growth. Policies and initiatives that are not adequately implemented or sustained can undermine the sector’s potential.

Addressing these challenges requires a concerted effort from both the public and private sectors. Companies like Wakanow can play a role by advocating for policy changes, investing in infrastructure where possible, and promoting domestic and international tourism destinations within Nigeria. Ultimately, overcoming these challenges will require a collaborative approach to unlock the full potential of Nigeria’s tourism sector.

Generally, how would you assess Nigeria’s Tourism sector?

Nigeria’s tourism sector is a treasure trove of untapped potential. It boasts a rich cultural heritage, stunning natural landscapes, and vibrant cities. However, to fully harness this potential, we must address the challenges mentioned earlier.

In recent years, there has been progress. We’ve seen increased investments in infrastructure, improved security measures, and a growing interest in promoting domestic tourism. These are positive signs that the sector is on the path to realizing its full potential.

As we celebrate Nigeria’s Independence, it’s an opportunity to reflect on the strides we’ve made in the tourism sector. We believe that with concerted efforts from both the public and private sectors, Nigeria’s tourism will continue to flourish, offering Nigerians and the world a glimpse of the incredible beauty and cultural richness of our nation.

Wakanow.com remains committed to being a catalyst for positive change in Nigeria’s tourism sector. We will continue to play our part in unlocking the immense potential of this sector, ensuring that every Nigerian can enjoy the freedom to explore and experience the wonders of our great nation. Happy Independence Day, Nigeria!

In this chat with The Guardian, Comrade Oluwaseun Babatunde Fatai, CEO of Tunadex Value Chain Resources, speaks on how the company stands out in the Nigeria Tourism sector and strategies adopted in growing the brand. Excerpts…

TCVR’s Impact on the tourism industry in Nigeria

Since coming on board, Tunadex Value Chain Resources has made positive impact in the Nigerian tourism sector. Last year, we participated in Akwaaba and the programme was successful. We have also seamlessly helped a lot of Nigerians to travel to different countries around the world.

On challenges faced in the tourism business

The major challenge we are facing is the rising dollar exchange rate to the naira. This is really affecting our jobs in all aspect. For instance, flight tickets before now was quite cheap but now, it is so expensive due to the exchange rate. Of course, this discourages people from thinking of touring for now. During summer, the tickets are usually more expensive and it is affecting our work. It is only people that have the money that enjoy it.

Assessment of the Nigerian tourism industry

Tourism in Nigeria is taking a new shape for good. Around the country some state governors are making notable impact in the tourism sector. The governor of Lagos State, His Excellency Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is making giant strides in Lagos, sooner or later, Lagos would be the envy of other states. Also, in Osun state, every year the Osun-Osogbo festival attracts people from all works of life across the world. Aside the fun people derive from the festival, they also learn more about the culture and way of life of Osun indigenes.  There are lots of tourist attractions in Nigeria, we have the Olumo Rock in Abeokuta, and we also have the spring water where hot and cold water meet in Ekiti state and many more in other states across the country. State governors are trying their best to make sure that these tourist centers are being revived so that it does not go into extinction.

Why Tunadex Value Chain?

When we tell our clients our ways of operations, they do not argue or have any doubt about us. The important thing is to know what they (our clients) are going to do in countries of their choice of travel. Once we know this, we go out of our way to give them the best package and satisfy them. We also make tourism fun for all the people involved. We don’t do tourism for individuals except you specifically ask for it. Most times, we prefer to go in groups because it is cheaper that way.

Contribution of the tourism industry to GDP

I once mentioned that if the Governor of Lagos can develop some of our tourist centers like the ones in Badagry, Ikeja and some other places, people from different countries would want to visit Lagos every now and then. The festivals which are held in Osun State also serve as tourist attractions. Foreigners get fascinated by local things, if we are able to develop these things, we will earn. The last time we went to Kenya, we were charged in dollars at the Zoo and Museums. The indigenes don’t even value what they have there, it is outsiders that go there. If we are able to replicate what was done in Kenya, people from different countries will come to Nigeria, Eyo festival for example is a tourist attraction. They have to modernize it in such a way that people will be attracted to come and watch.
