The Network on Police Reform in Nigeria (NOPRIN) has decried the recent incident where a minor was sexually abused while in detention at the Divisional Police headquarters, Tse Agbaragba in the Konshisha Local Council of Benue State.

Belasa Iyangedue, now a dismissed Police Constable, allegedly assaulted the minor. A statement signed by Programme Officer, NOPRIN, Precious Osinaku, said the incident was an insult to principles of justice, stressing the need for reforms and training in the force to prevent subsequent occurrence.

NOPRIN demanded transparency and justice as the force handled the case.

“This incident is a grave violation of trust, gross abuse of power, and an affront to the principles of justice and human rights and the duty of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to protect the vulnerable.

“We strongly condemn this act and demand swift and transparent action from the Police to bring the perpetrator to justice.”

It is essential that a thorough investigation is conducted and the accused officer is held accountable for his actions. The victim and her family must be provided with all necessary support during this difficult time.

“This incident highlights the urgent need for comprehensive reform and training within the Police to prevent such atrocities from occurring in future.

“We call on the Police and other key stakeholders to take immediate steps to ensure the safety and well-being of all individuals in their custody, especially minors,” the group said.

NOPRIN also urged the public to support organisations and initiatives working to reform the criminal justice system and protect the rights of citizens.
