ACReSAL set to restore landscape in Kano communities

AGRO-CLIMATIC Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) has concluded modalities for landscape restoration in communities suffering environmental degradation in Kano State.

ACReSAL, a World Bank-funded project, through International Development Association (IDA), will also deploy intervention on water conservation structures and enhance climate-smart agriculture in the state.

The project seeks to address poor agricultural production, climate risk, high poverty rate and weak institutional capacity through support of activities to develop multi-sectoral approaches for desertification, control and landscape management.

It was designed by the Federal Government to build community resilience and improve the sustainable productivity of natural resources in the North, state coordinator of the programme, Dr. Dahiru Hashiru, explained.

He told journalists in Kano that the six-year project, which began operations in 2022, focused on four components, including Dryland Management, Community Climate Resilience, Institutional Strengthening and Project Management as well as Contingency Emergency Response.

The coordinator revealed the $700 million project targeted massive tree planting to reduce the impact of desertification, control erosion in local councils prone to flood and construction of irrigation to boost all-seasons farming mechanism.
