‘Ensuring safety in schools should be collaborative efforts’

The Principal of Methodist Boy’s High School, Rev. Dr. Paul Olukunga, has said that safety in schools should be collaborative efforts between the parents and school officials.

Olukunga, who spoke at the 26th founder’s day and prize giving ceremony of Dowen College, Lagos, stated that joint efforts of parents, the teachers and school managers are required to make the pupils turn out well.

He noted that if the parents neglect their side of the bargain, there would be some gaps and missing links, stating reason some students exhibit some untoward acts in school.

Dignitaries at the occasion included the Publisher of The Guardian Newspaper, Lady Maiden Alex-Ibru; the founder of Dowen College, and Chairman, Advisory Council, Dr. Olumide Phillips, his wife, Toyin; Bishop of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, Diocese of Lagos West, The Right Rev James Olusola Odedeji.

Olukunga observed that when a child sometimes bullies other students, it cannot be totally blamed on the school. “That child that bullies is from which home. Is the father a bully or the brother or siblings or mother? We thank God for this college. The college is striving; the students are doing fine in both internal and external examinations. They have good results and I pray that God will continue to prosper the founder of the school.” He advised the students to remain focused, because their parents cannot be spending money on them, and yet they would not be focused.

The Principal and Head of School at Dowen College, Dr. Adebisi Layiwola, said that the event was meant to thank to God and acknowledge the students who did very well in the last academic session.

“We gave awards to outstanding students to appreciate and encourage them to do better.”

As we commend them, we are hopeful that they will keep putting in their best so they can do more and achieve their potentials.

“Also, some of the members of staff, especially those who have put in five to 20 years of service were duly acknowledged and appreciated.” She said that the school had won many local and international awards.
