
What could have resulted in a major fire disaster was averted, yesterday, when a tanker, loaded with Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol, fell on the road and spilled its contents in Ogba area of Lagos State.
However, the timely arrival of officials of Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) at the scene, saved the day as they spread water on the contents and prevented the liquid from igniting.
Director of Public Affairs, Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Taofiq Adebayo, said officials who first arrived at the scene, had to call other emergency responders, including fire fighters to avert the looming danger.
He said: “LASTMA operatives averted what could have been another major fire disaster at Ajayi Junction, along Oke-Ira Road by Excellence Hotel, Ogba, Ikeja. The tanker, which was fully loaded with petroleum products, fell, and spilled its contents towards residential buildings.
“To avert another imminent fire disaster, LASTMA officials, as first emergency responder, on arriving at the scene, immediately called other emergency responders, particularly the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services (LSFRS).
“After arriving at the scene, our personnel immediately secured the environment against area boys, including members of the public who had gathered to scoop fuel from the tanker. ”
“Policemen from Area ‘G’ Police Division provided security backup at the scene, with the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Services doing the needful.
“Motorists coming from Haruna or Ojodu Berger end were diverted through Excellence Hotel to come out from Muyibi Street, and link Oke-Ira to continue their journey.”
