Why AHF marks IDGC consistently, by Director

Ijezie
Country Programme Director of AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria, Dr Echey Ijezie, has said the foundation consistently marks the International Day of the Girl Child (IDGC) to create awareness to the challenges young women face in the society.

In a statement, yesterday, towards this year’s IDGC, with the theme ‘Amplify Her Voice’, he noted: “AHF’s consistency in commemorating the IDGC is predicated upon the need to bring awareness to the challenges young women and girls face, including unequal access to employment and education opportunities, as well as increased barriers to healthcare compared to their male counterparts,” said Ijezie.

Observed yearly on October 11, the IDGC celebrates girls and allows advocates to draw attention to the many challenges girls must overcome.

“Young women worldwide account for over 50 per cent of all people living with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). They are also among the more than 500 million people enduring poverty, including harmful stigma and inadequate access to hygiene products and proper facilities that hinder their success,” the foundation stated.

To highlight the unique challenges young women face in their daily lives, AHF Nigeria will commemorate this year’s IDGC in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Waru community in Abuja on October 11, 2023.
