Kano governor distributes palliatives, excludes appointees from beneficiaries


Kano State Governor Abba Kabiru Yusuf on Monday flagged off the second batch of food distribution to the less privileged as part of a palliative measure to crush the impact of subsidy removal in the state.

However, Yusuf declared that no member of his cabinet including political appointees presently serving as well as senior civil servants should benefit from the food items.

Similarly, the Governor was emphatic on the category of people that should enjoy the intervention and insisted that no member of the compliance committee instituted across local and ward levels should benefit from the food items.

Unveiling the distribution at Coronation Hall, Government House, Yusuf hinted that the government has procured 193,000 bags of 10kg of Rice and 193,000 bags of 10kg of Maize for onward disbursement to poor and vulnerable people as well as people with special needs across the 484 political wards in the state.

Also selected to benefit are Islamiyya Schools, social and Rehabilitation centers, People With Special Needs, Junior Civil Servants from level 1 to 8, Widows and Orphans of deceased Army, Navy, Airforce, Police, DSS, Immigration, Customs, NDLEA, Prisons, NSCDC, VIO, Vigilante and Kwankwasiyya guard.

Yusuf disclosed that apart from the food items, his administration has concluded a plan to unveil other social components to ease the suffering of the people.

According to him, 5,000 women, youths, and People With Special Needs drawn from 44 local government areas will be empowered on different skill acquisition programs.

To further ameliorate the impact of the economic hardship on transportation and movement of citizens, the Governor said disbursement of Amana buses and taxi transport scheme will soon come on stream.

He added that the Kanawa mass transit established by previous government will be relaunched at subsidized rates.
