Top candidates to watch out for in 2024 Edo governorship election

The 2024 Edo state governorship election is shaping up to be highly competitive, with several notable candidates positioning themselves for the race to Dennis Osadebey House. Three prominent candidates with impressive credentials are emerging as frontrunners: Asue Ighodalo, Dr. Ehizojie Imafidon Ohiowele, and Prof. Oserheimen Osunbor.

Asue Ighodalo:

Asue Ighodalo
  • A prominent Nigerian lawyer from Edo State.
  • Co-founder of the renowned law firm Banwo-and-Ighodalo, specializing in corporate and commercial law.
  • Holds key roles as Chairman of Sterling Bank Plc, Director at the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA), and Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG).
  • Education background includes studies at Kings College, Lagos, the University of Ibadan, the Nigerian Law School, and the London School of Economics.

Dr. Ehizoije Imafidon Ohiowele:

  • A serial entrepreneur, financial expert, and experienced banker.
  • Over 25 years of experience in the private and public sectors of the Nigerian and African economy.
  • Co-founder of a licensed fintech company providing financial services to the unbanked, underbanked, and banked.
  • Holds multiple degrees in Economics, Business Administration, Economics & Finance, and a PhD in International Business. An alumnus of prestigious institutions like Harvard Business School and the University of Oxford.Prof. Oserheiman Osunbor:

  • A distinguished career, including serving as Governor of Edo State in 2007 (though his victory was later invalidated).
  • Extensive educational background, including graduating with a First Class Honours Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka.
  • Called to the Nigerian bar in 1976 after attending the Nigerian Law School, Lagos.

All three candidates hail from Edo Central, where the governorship seat has been zoned. This upcoming election seems to have attracted highly qualified contenders, making it one of the most competitive races in the history of Edo elections since the return of democracy in 1999.
