The name of the lord is a strong tower – Part 1

God has always revealed himself to man under different titles and names in the Old Testament. He has also remained unchanged in His nature and character. In the New Testament, the name Jesus occupies a special place because the name climaxes God’s revelation to man of who His son is.

The CAYA prayer series said this: “God’s name represents His collective attributes and characteristics. His nature, power, and glory. His name represents who He is. In Exodus 3:13-15 God said: “I am My name. Whatsoever I am, that’s what I’m called. My name is whatsoever I am at the time I am it.” God is our all-sufficiency, and His name differs depending on what our need is at a particular time.”

Psalm 9:10 says: “And those who know Your name will put their trust in You; For You, Lord, have not forsaken those who seek You,” (Psalm 9:10 NKJV).

Again in Isaiah 52:6, we read, “Therefore My people shall know My name; Therefore they shall know in that day That I am He who speaks: ‘Behold, it is I.”

All these go to show that the name of God, especially His son, Jesus is special. Our knowledge of the name of God should not be superficial, but experiential and reverential knowledge. The knowledge of God must be in-depth. It is only then we can trust in Him and harness the power that is in His name.

David had a personal knowledge of God as the Lord of Hosts and harnessed the power in that name to defeat Goliath. While Goliath was armed with a spear, javelin and sword, David came against him in the name of the Lord. “Then said, David to the Philistine, thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the Lord of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied,” (1 Sam.17:45).

God’s name represents more than just something we call Him — it represents who He is. He is Jehovah — the self-existent One who reveals Himself. But that name is attached to other names — ones that offer promises to us.

He is Jehovah-Jireh, the One who sees and provides for us.
He is Jeohvah-Nissi, the One who is our banner of victory when we face foes.
He is Jehovah-Tsidkenu, the One who is our righteousness when our sins would separate us from God.
He is Jeohvah-M’kaddesh, the One who sanctifies us and delivers us from our innermost battles with sin.
He is Jehovah-Shammah, the One who is present with us – preparing a table for us in the presence of our enemies.
He is Jehovah-Rohi, the One who is our Shepherd and leads us through our lives. He is Jehovah-Rophe, the One who heals us from all our diseases and brings us out of sickness and pain.

Finally, He is Jehovah-Shalom, the One who gives us peace no matter what is happening in our lives.

Truly His name is a strong tower to which we can run and find shelter in whatever situation we face.

While answering the criticism of the Jewish leaders in John 8:56-58, Jesus said: “Your father Abraham rejoiced that he would see my day. He saw it and was glad.” The Jews then said to him:
“You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?” Jesus said to them: “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I Am.”
