Exploit space technology for growth, Tinubu advises African leaders

President Ahmed Tinubu, yesterday, implored African leaders to tap into opportunities inherent in space technology to grow their economies.He made the appeal yesterday, while opening the inaugural African Space Economic Conference and Exhibition in Abuja.

Themed, “Exploring Space Economy for Africa’s Economic Growth,” the conference was organised by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) in collaboration with the Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI)

Represented by Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Uche Nnaji, the President noted that space technology had become the bedrock of modern economies, with 60 per cent of the world’s top 10 billionaires being active players and beneficiaries.

He promised that the 2023 edition would create an opening for an expanded African involvement and partnership in global economic opportunities and social development.

“The only vehicle for Africa to catch up with the rest of the world is to explore the immense benefits now hidden in the space sector to unleash creativity and sustainability,” Tinubu counselled.

In his address, ACCI president, Osi Imomoh, acknowledged that Africa is lagging behind, urging a change of attitude. Earlier, NASRDA Director-General, Halilu Ahmed Shaba, reminded participants that the space industry had the potential to revolutionise several sectors in Nigeria.

He advocated the development of the nation’s space sector in a responsible and sustainable manner that “requires investing in research and development, building a skilled workforce, engaging in international cooperation and promoting public, private partnership.”

ACCI’s Director-General, Victoria Akai said, corroborated previous speakers.

In his Keynote address, Ade Ogundeyin, who spoke on: “Leveraging Space Technology for National Security and Potential Investment,” submitted that the intersection of space technology and national security along with the vast investment opportunities it offers, represents a transformative moment for Nigeria and the entire African continent.
