Firm donates potable water to Ogun community, promotes hygiene

To commemorate the 2023 Global Handwashing Day (GHWD) activities, Reckitt has donated a solar-powered borehole and water station to a rural community, Area J4, Omo Forest Reserve in Ogun State.

It also undertook comprehensive enlightenment, in partnership with Wellbeing Foundation Africa, and gifted soaps, hand sanitisers and other sanitary materials.

According to the firm, the gesture, besides reinforcing the global event’s theme, “Clean Hands Are Within Reach,” also underscores the brand’s unwavering commitment to promotion of healthier communities.

General Manager, Reckitt Sub-Saharan Africa, Akbar Ali Shah, restated the company’s promise for access to quality health and hygiene solutions by all, as a right, and not a privilege.

Clean hands, he noted, are critical for good hygiene, adding that access to clean water remains the pivotal first step in the journey.

He said: “In addition to providing clean water, providing education is also essential for the sustainability of good hygiene practices. Dettol has been present in Nigeria for over 50 years, and has been raising awareness about the importance of hand washing with soap for overall well-being through our communications, partnerships and programmes.

“Our impact also goes beyond the Area J4 Community in Ogun State. Over the past nine years, we have reached over 10 million children and mothers around Nigeria with our hygiene education, and will continue to do so to achieve a cleaner and healthier nation.”

Receiving the items, Project Manager, Ogun State Forestry Plantation, Babatunde Adebosin, appreciated the gesture.

He said: “Previously, it is only when it rains, or at the stream, that we source water. Clean water is invaluable in promoting good hygiene and health, and this will go a long way in helping the community to be more hygienic.”
