17 dead in Taraba boat mishap as rescue operation continues

A boat mishap in Taraba State, Nigeria, has left at least 17 people dead and 73 others unaccounted for, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) announced on Monday.

The incident occurred on Sunday, October 29, in the Mayo Ranewo community of Karim Lamido LGA. The boat was carrying 104 passengers when it capsized.

NEMA’s Yola Operations Office said it received a report of the mishap from the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency (TSEMA) and immediately activated search and rescue operations.

As of Monday, 14 passengers have been rescued, 17 dead bodies have been recovered, and 73 passengers remain unaccounted for.

NEMA noted that the search for the remaining passengers is ongoing, with the help of local divers.

“NEMA, TSEMA, and other stakeholders are coordinating the operation,” it added.
